On September 22, Brazil celebrated Banana Day! 🍌Brazil is the world’s fourth largest producer of this fruit, producing about 7 million tons per year. However, banana growers face significant challenges in cultivation, such as Tripes control. To help banana growers, BASF’s plastic additives team has developed innovative technologies to increase the profitability and sustainability of banana farming. One of these innovations is an anti-insect plastic bag that is applied at the beginning of banana flowering, wraps around the bunch and remains in place until harvest. This bag contains an anti-UV additive that filters the light of the same wavelength as that seen by the tripes, confusing them when they enter the bag and preventing damage to the bananas. This initiative allows banana growers to effectively manage the pest and disease challenges, improve fruit quality and increase grower profitability.Let's celebrate Banana Day and the positive effect this technology is bringing to increasethe production of this fruit. With the thrips attack, in the warmer seasons it can cause rashes on the banana skin which significantly reduces the visual quality of the fruit. The repellent effect is due to an additive developed by BASF that has the same wavelength as the insects vision. The great advantage of this solution is that it controls the past more practically. The plastic film should be applied at the very beginning of the bananas flowering period and remain in place until the fruit is harvested. The damage left by the thrips is reduced because when it enters the banana bag environment, the insect has limited vision which causes confusion and makes it leave. The product can be used for two harvests, guaranteeing the same insect control efficiency. Unlike other solutions on the market, it is easy and quick to install. This consequently reduces application costs. A milestone of innovation in the agricultural business, bringing more and more sustainability to banana production in Brazil.

We are thrilled to venture into the industrial tomato industry, working closely with experts to make the process more sustainable while producing the highest quality tomatoes. In Greece, industrial tomato growing is an essential sector, expected to produce around 500,000 tonnes in 2024. This industry has long relied on non-sustainable EPS trays, which create significant waste. To tackle this issue, we developed a bespoke Double Tray System (DTS) with 336 cells specifically for propagating industrial tomatoes. This innovative system is designed to maximize productivity, yielding healthier seedlings while also protecting the environment. Before launching this project, we conducted extensive trials with growers across the country to ensure the DTS would be effective. After successful testing, we're excited to roll out the system this year. This initiative is more than just a project; it's a passion driven by collaboration with our incredible partners, including seed companies, converters, and affiliate growers, who helped bring this vision to life. Our goal is not just to appear more sustainable but to enact lasting change that leads to a greener future. We're already seeing promising early results and look forward to monitoring our progress. By the September harvest season, we plan to compile a comprehensive report to share with the industry, inspiring the widespread adoption of sustainable practices.Keep an eye out for updates, and share your thoughts in the comments below.—--------------------------We are Ina Plastics, creators of the Double Tray System.Revolutionizing the propagation of young plants, to produce strong and healthy seedlings.Providing sustainable solutions to growers worldwide.Connect with us on LinkedIn.Message us for more information.#SustainableGrowing #AgricultureInnovation #InaPlastics #Industrial Tomato #DoubleTraySystem

Brazil supplies nearly half of the world's coffee, with arabica second only to petroleum as the most valuable traded commodity. But climate change is threatening this essential crop: by 2050, areas suitable for coffee farming could shrink by 50%. In an article from #EthicalCorp's issue, Growing against the Grain, (download pdf here: https://lnkd.in/eeKxP99E) Terry Slavin reports on farmers in Brazil like Marcelo Montanari who are pioneering regenerative agriculture to combat these challenges. On his 250-hectare farm, Montanari has cut chemical use, planted native trees, and integrated sustainable pest management. Montanari is part of a larger movement, the Cerrado Coffee Farmers Cooperative (#Expocaccer) now has 68 farms certified as regenerative by regenagri, with coffee brands like illycaffè and Nespresso UK actively supporting these efforts. Nespresso aims to convert 95% of its coffee farms to regenerative practices by 2030, working with partners such as the Rainforest Alliance. Terry also interviews Ana Paula Curiacos Urtado and her husband Marcelo Cocco Urtado, who run a 54-hectare farm using 100% natural methods to nurture the soil and fight pests. Their commitment to regenerative practices, which includes solar power and cover crops, has boosted yields and protected their farm during extreme weather, such as Brazil's recent frost and heatwave. With global coffee demand rising, sustainable practices are essential to protect both the crop and the 120 million people whose livelihoods depend on it. marcelo montanari, Cecilia Seravalli Soares, Nestlé, Julie DUBOST - de FERRON, Santiago Gowland, Blue Marble, Mirova, Franco Costantini, Liam Dowd#CoffeeFarming #RegenerativeAgriculture #Sustainability #ClimateChange #Brazil #Nespresso #Illycaffè #ResilientFarming #CoverCropping #ExtremeWeatherhttps://lnkd.in/eSRFugxe

Today, the EU’s Animal By-Products Regulation is not conducive to the development of a functioning circular economy in Europe. ECOFI members are committed to the principles of the circular economy, but many are restricted from placing their organic-based fertilising products on the market due to incoherent and disjointed policies that hinder farmer access to recycled, organic sources of plant nutrients. ➡ This is why ECOFI has signed EBIC (European Biostimulants Industry Council) open letter about the EU’s Animal By-Product regulation titled ‘The EU needs an approach to materials from animal origin in the food chain that is fit for the Circular Economy’ along with fourteen other organisations representing the agroindustry and consumer organisations. ECOFI and the other co-signatories, “call on the Commission to include a work item in its 2024-2029 work program to undertake a comprehensive review of the European Union’s approach to the regulation of materials from animal origin”. The EU need to promote circular innovation to allow sectors like the organic-based fertiliser industry to place their products on the market and help support the EU’s food security and strategic autonomy through revalorisation of organic waste and by-products. The best way the EU can do this is to provide a safe and coherent path to market for such products. When we consider where our clothes come from, we often underestimate the potential for innovation in the raw materials used. Here in Brazil, we are currently in the process of planting a new crop of cotton, and we are proud to highlight five sustainable and innovative practices that we employ during this stage of cultivation. One such practice is no-tillage, which has become a common practice in our cotton growing. Not only does it allow us to utilize the organic matter from previous crops, but it also preserves the health and nutrients of the soil

That’s a wrap at Fruit Logistica. It was a joy connecting with industry peers, discussing our challenges, and witnessing innovations with significant potential for a more sustainable future. Here is what you missed: 👇 Despite groundbreaking innovations in the fields of robotics, AI and precision irrigation, what stood out the most were the discussions on how fruit and vegetable production can still thrive despite drastic changes in climate.↳ Fruits and vegetables are the future if we aim to support a growing global population 🌎 and maintain a healthy planet 🌿↳ Scientists have devised a diet where fruit and vegetables make up around half of the daily food input 🥦, in response to how approx. 10 billion people are going to be fed in 2050.↳ Simply reducing our consumption of meat 🥩 can significantly mitigate climate change, according to expert in the field, Nils Ole Plambeck, who spoke at the Fresh Produce Forum 🗣️↳ Exploring sustainable fruit growing methods it’s crucial for producers. A prime example of this is the (Re)Generation Fruit consortium established by the French’ producers association, Blue Whale, that is researching how: ↳ Orchards can be cultivated with less water 💦 and more sustainably 🌳 ↳ Soil quality can be improved 🌱 ↳ To reduce pesticide use by up to 50% 🛡️Embracing the challenge of climate change 🌪️, Fruit Logistica showcased solutions that promise not just to adapt, but to regenerate our agricultural practices 🔄. This is not just innovation; it's a roadmap to a sustainable future. What impressed you the most at this year's Fruit Logistica?—-------------------We are Ina Plastics, creators of the Double Tray System.Revolutionising the propagation of young plants, to produce strong and healthy seedlings.Providing sustainable solutions to growers worldwide.Connect with us on LinkedIn.Message us for more information.#horticulture #sustainability #innovation #fruitlogistica #exhibition #freshproduce
